A new student accommodation building was designed for a sensitive site adjacent to the Grade 1 listed Bartlemas Chapel and Farmhouse. The Bartlemas hamlet dates from 13th century and was formerly the medieval leper hospital of St Bartholomew’s. The heritage significance of the site within the Conservation Area is in its historical associations with a number of different continued uses: residential, religious, gardening, agricultural, recreational and sporting. The proposals responded to the delicate balance between public and private use and to ensure future sustainable management of the site. The new courtyard buildings were designed in the collegiate monastic typology and refer to the former farmyard enclosure in a fusion of traditional simple pitch roof ‘barn’ with collegiate quad.
